Museum Educator: Part-Time

JOB SUMMARY

The Museum Educator part-time is a position with the Museum’s Interpretive and Educational staff. Part-time educators will occasionally work up to 40 hours a week, but will average 29 hours or less/week over the whole year; There is no guaranteed minimum. Responsibilities are to perform historical interpretation in costume at all museum sites, outdoors and sometimes during inclement weather. Museum Educators are expected to perform all responsibilities, general and specific listed below, as well as to learn and provide ALL shipboard presentations, demonstrations, and activities. Educators are eligible to work all billets during normal day operations, overnight programs, off-site, and Museum special events. Educators are also eligible for the intermediate, supervisory role of “Chief of the Watch,” which is a program leader who manages the operations over a specific Museum site or Program. Educators are directly responsible to the Museum Public Programs Coordinators.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Primary Responsibilities:
1. Provide public presentations and programs on any of the museum’s sites. Those sites are: The Sloop-of-War USS Constellation, the WWII submarine USS Torsk; the WWII cutter USCGC Taney; the light ship Chesapeake; and the Seven-foot Knoll Light House.
2. Demonstrate ongoing mastery of program subject matter, adhering to approved curricula, and continue developing further expertise on our subject area.
3. Execute all programs according to approved plans and schedules, and ensure all program elements are included.
4. Wear a historical costume, including hats, and to exhibit positive, friendly interaction and demeanor with visitors and guests.
5. Provide and maintain their own 20th Century Naval costume consisting of any standard dark-wash, denim blue jeans, black shoes, and a light blue, cotton chambray shirt. Maintain HSB - provided 19th century naval costume and a dixie cup hat.
6. Monitor, provide for, and protect the safety of the vessels themselves and all visitors to them by knowing and following established safety policies.
7. Performing daily, routine duties and custodial maintenance at Museum sites in accordance with museum directives and instruction.

Other Organizational Responsibilities:
1. Support museum efforts such as, “all-hands” activities including but not limited to: 4th of July celebration; New Year’s Eve celebration; “Victory Night”, and Pearl Harbor Day.
2. Museum Educators must be able to do all manner of physical activities associated with boarding and departing the sites and opening and closing the sites.
3. Occasionally work catered events that will require working evening hours, as well as overnight programs which may, rarely, require working through the night. During overnight programs, educators will spend the night on the ship to which assigned.
4. Post and operate any of the various visitor service desks in the museum.
5. Operate gift shop counter, register, and restocking procedures.
6. Be an effective co-worker who promotes, by personal example and leadership, a positive work ethic and good morale among ship’s staff and volunteers.
7. Occasionally assist with preservation maintenance efforts including ship-moving, clearing snow, loading equipment, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS
1. As a “trainee” candidates must have completed the training and passed qualification for all active museum programs.
2. A Bachelor’s degree in Education, Museum Science, History, or a related field preferred, OR a minimum of 1 years of post-high school study in same or working in education programming. (A higher degree may substitute for 1 year of museum programming experience but does not necessarily increase qualification.)

3. must be available for weekend work shifts.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
1. While on duty, employees must be able to wear the appropriate, clean, and serviceable historic costume, including hats.
2. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to talk with and hear museum visitors. The employee often is required to stand; walk to various locations and maybe exposed to a variety of outdoor weather conditions.
3. The educator position will require occasional moderate lifting, pulling lines, operating shipboard equipment, traversing ladders, and navigating spaces with low overheads.

Benefits:

$15.00 - $17.00 /hr. Pay starts at $15.00/hr. Upon completion of their training, base pay increases to $17.00/hr. Museum Educators also receive an additional 10-20% pay bonus for overnight work and 10% additional pay when serving as a Chief Educator. All educators are entitled to worker’s compensation; paid birthday; paid day of jury duty; and life insurance. Upon reaching Full-time status, educators become eligible for all company insurance benefits, Paid Time Off (PTO), worker’s compensation; paid birthday; health & dental insurance; life insurance, and paid day of jury duty.

Visitor Services Representative - Part Time

JOB SUMMARY

The Visitor Services Representative (VSR) position is a part-time, hourly position with the Museum’s front-line staff at the Pier I and V ticket centers and gift shops. Part-time status means that VSRs may be scheduled to work up to 40 hours a week frequently, but will average 29hrs or less per week over the course of a year. VSRs are expected to be available on weekends and holidays as directed, and to perform all responsibilities, general and specific listed below.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serving as the primary contact with visitors to the museum, including greeting, interacting, communicating with them, and addressing their concerns and questions.
  • Providing high quality visitor experience including maintaining a positive attitude, politeness, and friendliness toward all visitors.
  • Performing daily, routine duties and minor custodial tasks in accordance with museum protocols, directives, and instruction.
  • Keeping gift shop shelves neat and stocked with merchandise.
  • Use computer-based point-of-sale system to process ticket and merchandise payments.
  • Practicing safe, effective, and exemplary work habits.
  • Being an effective co-worker who promotes a positive work ethic, good morale, and professionalism among ship’s staff and volunteers.
  • Knowing and communicating ticketing and operations policies, prices, and information to visitors.
  • Being aware of and complying with Museum directives and protocols, written and verbal, associated with the sites, including those of other departments and Department Heads.
  • Serving as the primary contact for visitors to managing ticketing, will-call, merchandise, and event registration sales and check-ins.

Organizational Responsibilities:

  • Supporting museum-sponsored efforts such as, “all-hands” activities/evolutions to include, but not limited to: 4thof July celebration; New Year’s Eve celebration; “Victory Night”, “The Blast,” and Pearl Harbor Day ceremonies.
  • Learning and demonstrating mastery of procedures and protocols for handling admission and retail operations at all HSB locations.
  • Informing each visitor of updates to daily operations such as site closures, program updates, etc.
  • Working Museum special and catered events as assigned.
  • While on duty, wearing clean, and serviceable dress complying with dress code.
  • Being available, generally, for weekends, holidays, overnight programs, and special evening programs/events.
  • Knowing and informing visitors about Baltimore Water Taxi tickets and operations.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must effectively handle visitor questions and concerns, stressful situations, and demonstrate an ability for decisiveness and quick thinking.
  • At least a High School Diploma, or current student status.
  • Must be able to do physical activity within the environment described below.
  • Must be available for weekend and holiday work.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Visitor Service Representatives (VSRs) must be able to do all manner of physical activities associated with boarding and departing the ships and buildings, opening and closing the sites, working outdoors sometimes during inclement weather conditions, and they must be physically capable of moving through the buildings and ships and performing all tasks associated with emergency procedures. VSRs may be required to shovel snow from the piers and the ship weather decks and gangways. VSRs will occasionally work catered events that will require working late, sometimes until after midnight, as well as special programs which may require working late.
